Dealing with Burnout, Slumps, or SAD

Dave Allen
President, AGRI-SEARCH

Life can be tough. Our situation in life and the people we interact with can lead to a variety of feelings and emotions…frustration, joy, depression, excitement, aggravation, happiness, and much more. When times get tough, in case you think what you are experiencing is something new, think back a few thousand years to Moses as he tried to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land.  In Numbers 11:11-14, it reads: And Moses said to the Lord, "Why are you treating me, your servant, so harshly?  Have mercy on me! What did I do to deserve the burden of all these people? ...I cannot carry all these people by myself!  The load is far too heavy!"

Sound familiar? Have you ever felt that way?  At some point, I think we all have, and it can come from a variety of causes. We may be burned out or overwhelmed with responsibilities at home or work.  We may be in a slump where things just haven’t been going our way.  Or, we may be one of many people who deal with challenges such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression related to the changing of the seasons.  It is most common from the fall into the winter and more common among people further north where the days are shorter.

In the workplace, family, or community, we all need to increase our awareness of the impact we have on others.  For those in a difficult situation, encouragement can do wonders for a downcast soul.  We must raise our head from our electronics and become more aware of the state of mind of the people around us. Be alert for signs of struggle.  Show you care and stay connected.  If needed, get them professional help.  Whether someone you care about is in a slump, burned out, or suffering from some type of depression or other emotional or mental struggle, be a person who makes a positive impact by bringing some friendly sunshine into their cloudy world.

"My mission in life in not merely to survive, but to thrive, and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style." – Maya Angelou

If you had to pick a quote to define your life, what would it be? I chose this quote because I feel it expresses my desire to impact the people around me and to leave things better than I found them. I’ve always tried to do what is best and to help others, but it wasn’t until our lives were forever changed that I made it my mission.

Ten years ago, my younger sister passed away in a car accident. The news caused pure
devastation
Chelbi (right) and her sister, Courtney,
at a fundraiser for their foundation
throughout our family and our community. People from all points of our lives stepped up to help us maneuver through the days and weeks that followed. It was truly a numbing experience, one where you can remember every detail, yet it all seems like a blur. While at the hospital, our parents were asked about organ donation and the immediate answer from all of us was a simple, "yes." Little did we know that one word would change us to the core.

Shortly after our loss, the Casey Williams Foundation was born. My older sister and I, along with a board of amazingly talented and strong women, have built this foundation to educate people on the importance of organ and tissue donation. Our foundation makes monetary donations to families who are on their organ and tissue donation journey, we have a scholarship program for both traditional and non-traditional students where the main requirement is community service, and we attend donor drives to sign up new donors. We can only do what we do because of the love and support from everyone around us, and we will spend the rest of our days paying that forward.

In 2019 I met Dave Allen. While learning about him, his family, and this organization, I knew it was a company I wanted to join. I had been seeking a career move that would allow me to do what I cared so much about in my personal life and bring it in to my professional life. The team at AGRI-SEARCH is passionate about serving the people they partner with and they do so with compassion and integrity. In this role we have the opportunity to assist both businesses and people to reach their full potential, make career moves that can greatly change their lives, or give someone the boost of confidence they need.

Being a member of the AGRI-SEARCH team isn’t the easiest role I have ever been in, but it is by far the most personal and rewarding.  How about where you are today?  What are you doing to make sure you are thriving, not just surviving?

Surviving the Slump

How excited do you think Pat Sajak is to ask contestants to buy a vowel after all these years? Do you think Beyoncé is tired of singing "Single Ladies" yet? Which do you think Michael Jordan loved more – the championship rings or shooting practice free throws for well over two decades of his life? There are monotonous phases of every career, even if your career is that of a pop star, a game show host, or a sports legend. We are certainly not exempt from that monotony either!

You might not be experiencing it right now, but someone you lead might be. You might be in the height of peak professional fulfillment season but start to coast after the holidays and need a boost. The purpose of this article is not to serve as a downer, but to serve as a preemptive boost to what everyone will experience at times throughout their careers! We want to address short-term solutions for managing a slump, mitigating boredom, and developing a carefully balanced mix of deliberate grind and patience. Even if you are in a great place professionally, if you implement a few of our suggestions, your great year can continue to evolve into something even greater.
