Integrity – A Timeless Life and Business Principle

Several years ago, at a Promise Keepers event, a speaker shared an insight I have never forgotten. He said, "Character is what a person does when no one else is looking."

As we begin a new year, a question for us to ponder is, "What does my character meter read when people see me, hear me, work with me, or think about me?"

Last year, I’ll never forget a life lesson in character that I received. As I pulled into the local post office drop box lane, a 94-year-old gentleman I know very well was ahead of me and out of his vehicle picking up letters strewn all about. My thoughts were, "Poor Jerry…" Knowing he was blocking the drive-through, he wandered back to my truck and shared, "I was just driving by and saw these letters all over the ground and just wanted to get them where they belong."

Wow…no one was around; it was a nasty evening; there was no

personal gain in it for him. But he portrayed for me what a godly man of strong integrity should do…by stopping and doing the right thing when no one else was looking.

Just how does your character meter read? Are you willing to sacrifice of yourself for the benefit of someone else, even if they never know what you have done to help them? Are you being faithful to do the right things for those who are counting on you, whether it be in your job or for your neighbor, your marriage, or your family? If you are like me, you can use some improvement.  In this newsletter, we have shared an article, "A Job Worth Doing is Worth Doing Well" that includes a story about the founding of the Lego company.  We hope it will help inspire you to always do your best and to do it with integrity.

A Job Worth Doing is Worth Doing Well

Whether in our work or our personal dealings, there are numerous opportunities every day for us to make key decisions.  Our approach to making decisions, whether those decisions are simple or complex, presents us with choices to make.  Each of us have core guiding principles in life which steer us in making decisions.

My wife has at different points in our marriage told me that on my tombstone she will put “A job worth doing is worth doing right.”  At times, she has shared that out of frustration with my natural tendency towards perfectionism that has bogged down a decision she deems much easier and quicker to make.  At other times, perhaps it has been shared out of my persistence and diligence to tackle and complete a project that many would have given up on.

No matter our personality, traits or tendencies, to make a positive impact in this world, we must strive to be men and women who want to do what is best for the people we impact by our decisions and actions. With that, we need training, guidance and inspiration every day of our lives.  Many of us get that inspiration from parents, family, friends, co-workers, the Bible, or from other sources.
